We have had to put many horses to sleep, we have done many “last acts of kindness” and we are more like a hospice and than a rehabilitation sanctuary sometimes.

But this is different. This is the first time that a horse wasn’t “dying” or obviously at the time to go. This is the first time of looking at a horse who could live another 10+ years and making a really awful decision to end her life now.

Recently Bonnie has been on heavy pain relief as we knew her time was coming to an end. So we didn’t want her to suffer. But with this it can almost trick us. She looked almost “happy”. This made it easy to forget why we made the decision and forget that the medication is hiding the truth. Unfortunately, she was on medication that can not be a long term solution.

But the truth is poor, Bon Bon needed pain relief to survive. There is no cure, she would not get better and we all knew that this was the right decision. However, it doesn’t make it any easier. It’s a terribly painful job, but if we don’t do it, no one else will. These horses need us. And today it’s about Bonnie, she needs us to make the right decision, set her free from a long life of pain.

She has had so much love in the past years, particularly in the last 5 months from a volunteer who has dedicated ever second of his spare time to loving her. She knows it, she is comforted and we will all be with her until the very end making sure she feels safe, secure and pain free.

We will then remember her happy moments, watching her enjoying her walks, rolling in the dust and munching carrots. We all love you Bonnie, you beautiful pony with the sweetest nature.
