Who Came First?
The winner of “Who started it all” goes to the one and only Iggy pup!
This scruffy little terrier is where it all began over 11 years ago. I was still in the UK, having just moved out from my parents’ house into a little caravan with a bit of land. I already had chickens, guinea pigs, gerbils and a cat. But then Iggy came along — and started something. He opened my eyes to the fact that there are so many unfortunate animals out there who need help, love, and a home.
The Difficult Starting Time
I wasn’t planning on getting a dog — I was only 18 at the time — but it happened. The runt of the litter, abandoned, starving and sad. The man who had them was living in a one-room attic with no access to outside space. I went round to walk his dogs (that was my job then) and came out having rescued a 9-month-old, terrified puppy that I had no idea what to do with. My mum wasn’t exactly impressed!
Those early months were tough — poo in the house, chewed sofas, chaos whenever I left, crying (me), vomiting in the car (him), and endless barking. But every second was worth it.
Choosing My Way in Life
He taught me what dogs have to give — how to love unconditionally. He inspired me to study dog training, animal first aid, and dedicate my life to animals. Little did we know that he would become the start of my life’s mission. Thanks to this wonderful little dog, hundreds of animals have been saved.
Iggy’s Legacy
He’s starting to slow down now, and it breaks my heart every day. He forgets things, barks without realising, and sometimes has accidents in the house. He needs me now more than ever — like I once needed him. But he still plays on the beach, still runs around the finca, still has that spark of puppy energy in him.
Whatever happens, Iggy’s legacy will live on. For years to come, countless animals from Refugio de Animales Horse Holidays Tenerife will thank him for starting it all.
